“Kreiz Breizh Akademi: Breton Music Meets Oriental & Greek Traditions”, a musical encounter between Brittany and the modal traditions of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean.
As part of their studies in traditional modal music at Kreiz Breizh Akademi, Gweltas Rault, Sarah Van Der Listz, Gwenaël Piel, Morgan Cosquer and Mathieu Alhachimi have developed a rich repertoire of songs and instrumental pieces spanning from their homeland, Brittany, to Quebec and other French-speaking regions.
The distinctive identity of Breton music emerges through its language, but also through the characteristic sound of its instruments, such as the biniou and the bombarde, which engage in dialogue with the double bass, bass clarinet, woodwinds and saxophone.
For this special collaboration, the ensemble joins forces with four musicians from Greece: James Wylie (saxophone), Giannis Galitis (clarinet and zournas), Olga Alexiou (voice and percussion) and Vangelis Vrachnos (double bass). Drawing on their different paths through jazz, traditional and modal music, they explore the common ground between Breton melodies and the musical traditions of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Modal music becomes a common language through which these musical worlds meet, recognize one another and engage in dialogue.
