Brazilian Music Vocal Workshop

with Lydia Stavraki and accompaniment by Giota Papadopoulou

Body

Workshop Description

The diversity of rhythms is one of the defining features of Brazilian music.

In this workshop, Lydia Stavraki invites participants to explore different aspects of Brazilian music through the voice. Together, we will identify rhythmic patterns while working on repertoire from various Brazilian musical genres, including choro, partido alto, bossa nova, as well as styles from Northeastern Brazil such as baião, maracatu and coco.

Through the repertoire, participants will learn how to approach each genre in terms of pronunciation, phrasing and the articulation of nasal vowels.

About Lydia Stavraki

Lydia Stavraki was born in Athens in 1994. She began singing and playing the piano at the age of eight. At nineteen, she moved to the Netherlands to study Psychology at Leiden University, but soon found her place in the Dutch music scene, performing with a variety of ensembles ranging from jazz to Greek music.

She holds a BSc in Psychology from Leiden University and a BA in Latin Jazz Music from Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam, where she studied with renowned musicians including Jarmo Hoogendijk and Lilian Vieira. In 2022, she was awarded the NL Scholarship and spent six months studying Brazilian music at the Universidade Federal do UniRio in Rio de Janeiro.

She is a member of the Dutch National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NJJO), with which she began touring nationally and internationally in July 2023 under the artistic direction of Maite Hontelé.

Lydia also leads her own trio, through which she presents original compositions that connect Latin and Greek musical traditions through the language of jazz. She performs in Spanish, Portuguese, English and Greek.

About Giota Papadopoulou

Giota Papadopoulou (Thessaloniki, 1984) began studying classical piano at the age of seven and graduated with highest honors under the guidance of acclaimed pianist and educator Inessa Symonidou. Shortly before completing her studies, she received an invitation from German professor Matitjahu Kellig to continue her education in Detmold, Germany.

Driven by a deep interest in the relationship between movement and music, improvisation and composition, she later moved to the Netherlands to study at the World Music / Latin Department of Codarts in Rotterdam, where she has remained professionally active ever since. She completed her Bachelor’s degree with a scholarship during her final year.

Throughout her studies and professional career, she has collaborated with emerging and established musicians from around the world, brought together by musical traditions from Cuba (Afro-Cuban music, rumba, salsa, son, bolero and Latin jazz), Brazil (samba, choro, bossa nova, capoeira and Brazilian jazz), and Africa (bata, kora and African jazz), while also engaging with Greek, jazz and experimental music.

Jam sessions have always played an important role in her artistic development. Since 2019, she has been a member of the Vrije Academie voor de Kunsten in Delft, where she teaches piano.

We look forward to welcoming you!
