The Nefes vocal ensemble presents its vocal performance “A CAPELLA – The Suite of Imaginary Creatures” in a unique location by the sea.
The welcoming Saltworks Keeper’s House will host Nefes Project’s “Imaginary Creatures” for an evening of singing at sunset.
Through song, spoken word, and movement, the performers’ voices narrate—both collectively and individually—stories drawn from folktales of the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and Latin America. These stories feature strange imaginary beings as well as familiar creatures from the natural world.
The performance repertoire is arranged entirely for voices and consists of traditional songs from around the world alongside original musical compositions. The texts are inspired by writers from both world and Greek literature, including Eduardo Galeano, Argyris Chionis, Jorge Luis Borges, Nikos Karouzos, among others, as well as by folk poetry from various cultures across the globe.
Through a sequence of stories, a musical suite unfolds, where one sonic image follows another, creating a modular sung work performed exclusively with voices—a cappella. Polyphony—of both sound and bodies—becomes the means of storytelling, inviting the audience on an exotic journey that sparks the imagination.

About Nefes
Nefes [breath] was founded in October 2019. The ensemble studies musical traditions of the Mediterranean and the Balkans, exploring new ways of performing and presenting them.
Combining polyphonic vocal techniques with the performative elements of music, theatre, and dance, the group investigates the expressive power of the ensemble. Its work focuses on contemporary arrangements of traditional melodies as well as original compositions inspired by these traditions, aiming to create complete performance works.
To date, Nefes has presented its work at To Domatio tis Geitonias in Thessaloniki, the Cosmopolis Festival in Kavala, the Tentart Festival in Drama, the 3rd Handmade & Recycled Theater Festival in Athens, and the Folklife and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia–Thrace. The ensemble also participated in Thessaloniki’s Open Theatre Stage of the City with the performance Untidy World.
In September 2024, Nefes released its first album.
