As a member of the Anna Lindh Foundation Network, olipoli is delighted to invite you to a concert by the ensemble Mordana, taking place on Mediterranean Day, Thursday, November 28, at the Refugee Museum of the Cultural Neighbourhood of the Municipality of Neapoli-Sykies.
November 28 is the Day of the Mediterranean—a day dedicated to recognizing our shared identity and heritage, and a reminder of the importance of intercultural dialogue, exchange and cooperation, acceptance of diversity, and the strengthening of bonds between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
To celebrate this occasion, the Anna Lindh Foundation coordinates the programme Sounds that Connect – The Day of the Mediterranean, through which musical performances take place simultaneously every year on November 28 in different countries across the Mediterranean. These performances stand as a sincere expression of unity and an effort to connect people through the universal language of music.
Within this framework, we are pleased to present Mordana, who will perform original instrumental compositions by Vangelis Vrachnos and Periklis Vrachnos, drawn both from their debut album Roots and from their forthcoming second release.
The ensemble features:
Vangelis Vrachnos | composition, double bass
Periklis Vrachnos | composition, violin, viola
Andriana Achitzanova | ney
Nikos Varelas | percussion
Makis Baklatzis | violin
Vasilis Zigeridis | qanun
Iakovos Moysiadis | politiko laouto, saz
Mordana
Mordana is the result of the creative collaboration between brothers Periklis and Vangelis Vrachnos, who, based in Thessaloniki, set out to explore new musical horizons inspired by the traditions of their homeland.
The ensemble’s name derives from a personal adaptation of the musical term “mordent,” an ornamentation technique referring to a rapid embellishment of a melodic line.
Their sound reflects the musical influences of the multicultural heritage of the peoples who have lived in the region, as well as the individual journeys, explorations and discoveries of each musician. Inspired by Mediterranean musical traditions, Middle Eastern taqsim, free improvisation and jazz, their music creates space for improvisation within an intricate interplay of rhythmic and melodic patterns.
